Innovative Charitable Giving Structures: How to Help Your Clients Save Taxes and Help Others with Blended Gifts

John M. O’Drobinak has practiced law in Lake County, Indiana, since 1960. He graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1957, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, and received his Juris Doctor Degree from Indiana University in 1960. He is a member of the Indiana Bar Association and the Lake County Bar Association. He has taught at Indiana University, Northwest, and has been an Adjunct Professor at the Valparaiso University Law School, having taught in the areas of Wills, Trusts, Estate Administration and Estate Planning.

Course Description

Many of your clients are charitably oriented. They have a goal of making transfers to family, but also want to have maximum impact with their charitable giving. A blended gift allows them to have the joy of making and seeing a current gift to charity, while also knowing that a transfer will be made through their estate. During this program, we will cover different strategies for blended gifts.

10 a.m. – 10:35 a.m. Video

A blended gift is a combination of a current gift and a deferred gift. This video gives an overview of tax planning for married couples and single persons. Then it moves into a discussion of blended gifts that involve lifetime and testamentary transfers.

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Charitable Gifting

A.      General discussion of the various tools available and their distinctions;

B.      IRS Instructions for gifting real estate (instructions included);

C.      Forms and explanations:

a.      Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust;

b.      Charitable Inter Vivos Lead Annuity Trust;

c.       Charitable Remainder Inter Vivos Unitrust
