About AmeriCorps and RSVP

AmeriCorps and RSVP are national networks of public service programs committed to addressing critical community needs in education, public safety, health and the environment.

Sponsored locally by the United Way of Porter County, AmeriCorps member’s primary duties involve serving schools and nonprofits throughout Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Marshall Counties in Northwest Indiana.
Older volunteers through the RSVP program match their life experience, skills, and wisdom with the needs of the community, from delivering meals to cuddling babies and serve throughout Lake, LaPorte, Porter and Starke Counties.

About the Presenters

AmeriCorps Program Director, Maddie Grimm, leads a team of 40+ members annually to support local schools and nonprofits. Grimm’s work experience includes tenure at Schererville Parks and Recreation, Taltree Arboretum & Gardens, Dunes Learning Center and Sheridan School Mountain Campus. She is an AmeriCorps alumni and a certified EMT-basic. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources from the University of the South and a Master’s degree in Environmental Education from Goshen College.

RSVP Regional Director, Evelyn Harris, has not only been part of United Way of Lake County for four years (as the Resource Development Associate), but also served as their Site Supervisor for the RSVP Program. She won the Station Supervisor of the Year Award in 2015. Passionate about serving others, Evelyn loves being a part of nonprofit organizations because she’s able to assist everyday people in meeting their needs with a hands-on approach. Her fun-loving, energetic spirit is contagious—and you’ll soon find out if there’s music playing nearby. She loves to motivate and encourage everyone she comes in contact with to live their best lives. Working in nonprofits has kept her rooted in the cause to invest in people, to help them reach their full potential.
