Empowering Youth Leadership and Activism

Legacy Foundation's Women in Philanthropy group partners with Mikva Challenge to bring this powerful workshop to Northwest Indiana.

We can deeply transform students' civic attitudes, skills and sense of agency by giving young people the tools to actively lead in their schools and communities. Join us on Friday, October 11th, from 10 am - 3 pm, for a workshop that will help you facilitate Project Soapbox and develop a Student Voice Committee in your organization or school.

Project Soapbox is a public speaking competition that calls on young people to speak out on issues that affect them and their communities.

  • Identify issues and envision change
  • Structure youth speeches
  • Address trauma

Student Voice Committees are designed to form crucial youth-adult partnerships to engage young people in decision-making processes.

  • In what ways do students have a voice in your school or organization?
  • Create a vehicle for youth to have a voice in decision-making in your school or organization.
  • Talk through potential challenges and gain a strategy for recruitment and leadership development.

In addition to the workshop training, particpants will receive a digital copy of the Student Voice Committee curricula and the Soapbox curricula. Materials are copyrighted and may only be used within the participant's respective not-for-profit organization. Lunch is included in the price. No more than two (2) participants per organization may register.

Train with Mikva Challenge President Brian Brady:

Brian Brady leads the Mikva Challenge with the vision of bringing civic empowerment and political participation to all young people. In 17 years of leadership, Brian has helped grow Mikva Challenge from a handful of schools to one that now engages over 15,000 youth annually in action civics programs in over 400 schools around the country. Brian coined the term “Action Civics” in 2007 to describe the Mikva Challenge process of teaching civics via authentic experiences in the democratic process. Currently, Brian is spearheading the expansion of Mikva’s unique model of action civics in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, and helping build action civics strategies and programs in cities around the country.
